Submissions open: Writing Place magazine

Submit your short stories, poetry, flash fiction, non fiction or personal essays for consideration for Writing Place magazine – our annual showcase of d/Deaf, disabled or neurodivergent writers and poets.
Arts Access Australia is inviting d/Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent writers and poets to submit a poem, flash fiction, short story, non-fiction work or personal essay for our online magazine Writing Place.
Writing Place magazine is published annually as part of Meeting Place, our annual forum on arts, culture and accessibility. The submitted works should tie in with the Meeting Place 2022 theme around the rights of the individual, as creator, worker, and human.
Submissions are open to Australian and international d/Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent writers and poets.
Up to 15 pieces will be selected for the Writing Place online magazine that will be published during Meeting Place 2022. Selected writers may also be invited to participate in Meeting Place 2022 in October to discuss, and read from, their work.
Successful contributions will receive a fee of AUD$200 (exclusive of GST).
To be selected, a submission must comply with the following criteria:
- be written in the English language, or accompanied by an accurate, complete translation into the English language
- word limit:
- Poems: up to 40 lines
- Flash fiction / short stories: up to 1500 words
- Non-fiction / personal essays: up to 1500 words
- address, in some way, the theme or an aspect of the theme. We are open to any and all angles on the theme.
Only one submission per person, please.
How to apply
To apply, please email the following to [email protected] by 11.59pm (AEST) on 11 September 2022:
- your submission (as a Microsoft Word document). If you are submitting a piece that requires a certain visual layout or composition, or particular syntax, grammar or mechanics (including capitalisation, punctuation or spelling) please also submit a version in PDF format clearly showing this
- your full name, preferred pronouns, contact details, the Australian State or Territory (or, if you live outside Australia, the city and country) you reside in, and a brief biography (100 word limit) and a headshot
- if relevant and you wish to do so, please also state if you are from a Culturally or Linguistically Diverse Background, are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, are a Person of Colour or LGBTQIA+
- confirmation that you identify as d/Deaf or disabled. PLEASE NOTE this opportunity is only open to writers who identify as d/Deaf, disabled or neurodivergent.
Submitted works will be reviewed and shortlisted by Arts Access Australia. The final selection will be curated by the 2022 Writing Place editor, Liel Bridgford.
The magazine will be published on the Meeting Place website and available for download as a PDF. You can view past editions of Writing Place magazine here.
About Meeting Place 2022
The signature event of AAA, Meeting Place is Australia’s annual national forum for arts, culture and accessibility. The disability-led forum brings together local, national and international arts and cultural leaders and funders, artists, and arts workers to present, perform, discuss and debate the latest in access and inclusion in the arts. The forum also showcases the work of exceptional d/Deaf and disabled artists from around Australia by providing opportunities for performance, exhibitions, screenings, publishing and more.
Meeting Place 2022 will be held in Naarm/Melbourne and Online from 6 to 8 October 2022. It will be presented in conjunction with Arts Centre Melbourne and Arts Access Victoria and will take place during Alter State festival.
