Writing and Poetry Mentorships: Writing Place 2022

Eight writing mentorships are on offer, with the aim of supporting a Deaf, disabled or neurodivergent writer from each state and territory. The mentorships are provided by Arts Access Australia, as part of our successful Writing Place initiative.
The mentorships include:
- 8 weeks of online mentoring with an experienced writer
- 3 professional development workshops, delivered online
- networking opportunities with your peers and peak industry bodies
- an opportunity to be part of a panel at Meeting Place 2022.
About the mentorship
The mentorship will take place online over 8 weeks, across August and September 2022. You will engage with your mentor once or twice a week during this time.
We will match you with a suitable professional mentor.
At the end of your mentorship, you will need to provide a short report of your experience participating in the program.
Professional development workshops
You will take part in three online professional development workshops. These workshops will support your career as a writer. They will give you information about the Australian writing and poetry sector. This includes information on alternate and mainstream platforms where you can submit your poems or stories. You will also receive practical advice on crafting publishable stories.
The three professional development workshops are:
- 1st Professional Development Workshop, 31 August: “Getting started”
- 2nd Professional Development Workshop, 15 September: “Support for your career as a writer”
- 3rd Professional Development Workshop, 28 September: “Storytelling”
Industry bodies involved in these workshops include:

About Writing Place
These professional mentorships are part of our successful Writing Place initiative. The initiative aims to showcase the work of Deaf and disabled writers and poets. Over the past two years, the initiative has published an online magazine as part of Meeting Place – our annual arts and disability forum. This year, in addition to the magazine, we will be providing writing mentorships to eight successful applicants. These mentorships are funded by the Australian Government, via their arts and funding advisory body, the Australian Council for the Arts.
You can view past editions of Writing Place magazine here. Submissions for the 2022 online magazine will open later this month.
Closing Date: 28 July 2022
